Italian Federation released a statement on the accusations of possible illegal betting involvement for Tonali and Zaniolo.

“The Federation announces that, in the late afternoon of today, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Turin has notified investigative acts to footballers Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo, currently meeting with the national team at the Federal Technical Center of Coverciano. Regardless of the nature of the acts, considering that in this situation, the two players are not in the necessary condition to face the commitments scheduled in the coming days, the Federation has decided to protect them to allow them to return to their respective clubs”.

As officially announced by the FIGC, the two Italy internationals have been served the official documentation that says they are under investigation for their role in a betting scandal.

This story began with Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli being investigated for using illegal betting platforms and potentially betting on football matches.

It then emerged that Tonali and Aston Villa’s Nicolo Zaniolo were also involved.

Tonali and Zaniolo have been allowed to leave Coverciano, where they were training for the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers. FIGC stood firm that, mentally speaking, Zaniolo and Tonali would not be fit to feature in Malta and England clashes ahead.

In the long run, there is serious potential for suspensions from the sport for all three players.
