Giroud’s goal came very late for Milan and was followed by a red card for the celebration in somewhat farcical scenes as the Frenchman made a very late impact in more ways than one.

Night of the French

French duo Theo Hernandez and Olivier Giroud stole the show as they scored crucial goals in Milan’s important victory.

Olivier Giroud proved his worth for AC Milan once again, as the late substitute scored the winning goal won it for the Rossoneri in the 88th minute.

The defeat last time at Torino was a wake-up call, as Stefano Pioli knew his side had to respond against a team who secured a dramatic win last time they played on Milan’s patch.

Rade Krunic almost broke the deadlock if his strike did not rattle agains the crossbar. But only 4 minutes later, Theo Hernandez gave Milan the lead, in the 19th minute.

The left-back chested down Ismael Bennacer’s cross, before placing an effort on the half-volley beyond Bartolomiej Dragowski.

Milan’s lead stood for the rest of first half, despite some chances created by both sides toward the break.

It was Spezia who struck back halfway through the second, as Daniel Maldini – on loan to the Ligurian club from Milan – placed a powerful effort into the far corner against his parent club. It’s safe to say, his father, Paolo was not happy in the stand though it was an nice goal by his son…

Milan then thought they had quickly responded five minutes later, but Sandro Tonali’s strike into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area was ruled out by VAR for a foul in the build-up by Fikayo Tomori.

Giroud found a dramatic winner for Milan two minutes from time, catching Tonali’s cross towards the back post with an acrobatic volley into the near corner to spark wild celebrations in the stands.

Could not hold back his excitement after such a goal, the Frenchman took off his shirt for the celebrations, totally forgot that he was booked earlier. It was a red for Giroud as Milan was one man down with the game was still in minutes to finish.

Despite being forced to play out stoppage time with a man down, Milan held their nerve to secure a priceless victory to close the gap on league leaders Napoli to six points.
